What Kind Of Visa Do I Need To Be In Australia For 1 Year And A Half In My Case?

By , July 13, 2010

My boyfriend (German) and I (Mexican) live together in Thailand. He will be studying in Australia for 1 year and already has his student visa. What type of visa do I need to go with his for the time he’s there? I need a visa so I can work while he’s there.

  1. Lauren says:

people from mexico do not qualify for a working holiday visa
your boyfriend should have listed you on his visa application as a dependent,i don’t know of any other visa you qualify forhttp://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/working-…

Working hoiday visa…entitles you to stay for year only.
This visa is for people aged 18 to 30 years of age, who are interested in a working holiday of up to 12 months in Australia.http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/working-…

Your passport country does not have working holiday arrangements with Australia so your only option is to become a secondary applicant on your boyfriend’s student visa if you can qualify for that. There are no other options that will allow you to work at all or stay for longer than a few months.
As a secondary applicant on a normal student visa, you will be allowed to work for up to 20 hours per week at any time of the year. If he is here on a Masters by coursework (visa 573), Masters by research or a Doctoral degree (visa 574), a secondary applicant can work unlimited hours but the student is still restricted to 20 hours per week during semesters.http://www.immi.gov.au/students/students…
